2017 Cathedral Steps Festival in Erfurt: 'The Troubadour' by Giuseppe Verdi

Every year, the 70 large outdoor steps leading to the magnificent church ensemble of St. Marien's Cathedral and St. Severi Church (Severikirche) are transformed into one of the most beautiful open air stages. For over 20 years Erfurt Theatre, one of the most modern venues in Europe, has staged a different play each year against the fascinating romantic backdrop of Cathedral Hill. The stands can hold about 2,000 guests. Classic, modern, famous and less well-known productions are performed by Erfurt and international artists, with music lovers from Germany and all over the world enjoying the sounds of music. 2017 will bring the 'The Troubadour', one of the most famous and most performed operas by Giuseppe Verdi. And young fans of the theatre can look forward to a children's performance of 'The Jungle Book' during this time, which will be repeated after its tremendous success in 2015.

Great art and laid-back muse in Weimar Summer

Artists and their audience meet on balmy summer nights in the parks, at the squares and on the stages in Weimar. They play music, sing, celebrate and dance, listen and find casual elegance in Weimar, as can only be emanated by European cities of culture. Festivals, big open air concerts and drama search and find their audience, which is quickly fascinated by the city with its culture between classicism and modernism. The cultural highlights between July and early September are lumped together and called 'Weimar Summer'. In addition to the big events such as the extremely popular open air nights at the Lake stage in Weimarhalle park, the video facade festival Genius Loci Weimar or the Weimar art festival, there will also be smaller events that have special highlights. The programme includes international guest performances, concerts during the Weimar master courses, the jam session in Yiddish Summer, the open air summer theatre in Tiefurt park and the various celebrations of Goethe's birthday.

KulturArena in Jena

Every year, we witness a very special phenomenon in Jena: Software developers sit pensively at the windows of their high-rise office buildings, university employees interrupt their seminars, merchants sway happily to the beat. And why? Because an artist in KulturArena is tuning his instrument once again. KulturArena in Jena is not just another musical festival – everyone knows that if he have ever walked through the centre of Jena on a summer day. Since 1992, it has been an event that grips the whole city, a season of its own, a cultural centre of power. Not only do over 70,000 visitors come in six weeks to the Arena square in front of the theatre, but hundreds of people sit around every evening listening on the streets and squares, or just enjoying the tunes blowing through the city during the sound check in the afternoon. In addition to the concerts, a major contribution to the entire programme of the music festival is made by the theatre opening, the classical overture concerts, the children's programs, the club series and intimate acoustic concerts and especially the film nights on the days without concerts. The KulturArena in Jena – the opposite of a summer slump!

City and town church musicians in the district of Weimarer Land – Luther and the music

The district of Weimarer Land has nearly two hundred city and town churches, giving it a very special cultural and church history – unique as a total work of art consisting of architecture, history, cast bells and organ building. In ten concerts, you can have exceptional audio and visual experiences with new perspectives. The concert series will begin in Apolda's 'Lutherkirche' with the fireworks of medieval rock music that Luther would have liked too. 'RELIQUIAE' from Osnabrück will present its metaphorical lyrics in a church for the first time.

For Luther, music is a gift from God, which changed the general perception of music inside the church during the Reformation. His letter seal – the 'Luther Rose' – adorns pulpits, tribunes, windows, fountains, organs and bells in churches all over the place. Embark on the journey and visit the Luther painting by Goethe painter J. J. Schmeller in Daasdorf am Berg, the portraits of Luther in Drößnitz and Niederroßla, or the special glass portrait in Blankenhain's 'St Severi'!
